Here’s a tasty, frugal, and easy apple pie recipe to try for the holidays (or today). Apple pies are most frugal when apples are in season and when not using the oven to bake them! So I’m trilled to share this no-bake or raw applicious recipe with you.
The flavor of your raw apple pie filling depends on the apples you use. I like spartan, pink lady, and mackintosh apples. Since there’s no flour in this recipe, this pie is suitable for those on a gluten free diet. Personally, this is the best apple pie recipe I’ve ever eaten. But then again, I’m a frugalicious health nut. 😉

This recipe is adapted from a seriously delicious book: Ani’s Raw Food Kitchen: Easy, Delectable Living Foods Recipes (Amazon $13.57)
Ingredients
Almond Pie Crust:
- 1.5 cups almonds
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1.5 cups pitted dates
Syrup:
- 1/2 cup pitted dates
- 1 orange, peeled and seeded
- splash of water (as needed)
Apple Pie Filling:
- 5 cups apples, peeled, and thinly sliced (about 5 or 6 apples). I always add extra.
- 1 cup raisins (not pictured)
- 2 tbsps ground cinnamon
- dash of nutmeg (optional)
Preparation
To put this simple pie together you’ll need a food processor and a blender. No need to turn the oven on.
Crust:
Here’s how to make this nutty crust.
- In a food processor, pulse almonds and salt until nuts are in small pieces. Do not overprocess as you want the crust to have almond chunks.
- Slowly add small batches of dates into processor to mix with almonds. The dates will bind the almonds to form a dough.
- Press almond and date dough into a pie pan. Set aside.

Syrup:
The flavors in this syrup are amazing.
- In a blender, place orange first. Add dates and blend. Add water to help syrup mix well (if needed).
- Add syrup to apples. Set aside. The longer you let the apples stand in the syrup, the longer the apples will “cook”.
Apple Pie Filling:
- Place sliced apples in syrup in a large bowl with raisins.
- Toss with the cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg.
- Spoon apple pie filling into pie crust. So easy, tasty, and good. Enjoy!

This raw, no bake, and gluten free apple pie will keep in your fridge for two days. When I make this recipe, it doesn’t last a day. Snicker. I’m not sure why but I never miss the “cooked” flavor or the pastry crust. It’s just sooo yummy!
Ever thought of making a raw apple pie? It sounds so strange but it’s soooo good.
Mr Chiot’s will LOVE this. Although I must admit, I like baking in the winter, seems to make the house cozier.
@Susy I know what you mean about baking. I was very surprised by the flavorful smell of this pie though. It does fill the home with yummy smelling goodness. My “better half” does indeed love it. I don’t miss the “baked” feeling at all…especially with fresh, juicy, yummy apples.
That pie looks absolutely amazing and i am going to have to give it a try this Thursday. My family will be so surprised b/c I usually do not move a muscle all day Thursday! Thanks.
That looks and sounds sooo good. I have made RAW pie in the past but its been a while. 🙂
This looks like an ideal way to try out raw in a very appealing way! I think the crispness of the apples would be a welcome change of pace along with traditionally “baked” flavors.
@Carla I’m just getting started with raw desserts. They are so yummy.
@Doctor S It’s easy to make if you have a food processor or a slicer. So hopefully these tools will help you move less. 😉
@Sara On Simplicity The apples are from my orchard…so they are fresh and tasty. This pie tastes sooo fresh. I love it.
That’s so unusual! But it looks fantastic and not too difficult. I will have to try it for sure.

Interesting recipe… Thanks for sharing. The crust recipe looks like it could get a lot of use in my kitchen.
Thank you so much for this recipe… It’s summer here in Australia so made a wonderful summer apple pie to eat with friends and family after a swim! used crisp organic apples… very tasty… tonight [with help :)] discovered with leftovers that it’s even tastier with some strawberry pieces sprinkled on top of the apple… yum!
Looks awesome! Thanks for the recipe.
How in the world do you cut this pie and serve it? I’m thinking maybe to make in individual custard cups?

[…] Here is the recipe . . . all you need are apples, dates, almonds, a pinch of salt, an orange, (lots of) cinnamon and nutmeg.  🙂  I followed the directions exactly, except that I did not end up using all of the crust.  For me, the amount it made is enough for two pies! […]
