The votes are in! Squawkfox.com tops the "Best of the Money Blogs" poll in the personal finance category while WhereDoesAllMyMoneyGo.com wins the investing category. Meet all the fine bloggers.

I’ve never been much of a winner. Ok, I once won a package of dental floss for selling the most toothbrushes during a middle school fundraiser. This was a big win for me because I’m a huge fan of dental hygiene and I was a given the award in front of my brace-wearing class. But selling dental gear never really landed anyone in a big national newspaper.

Read about the winners in: The best Canadian money blogs

So you can understand my surprise, gratitude, and a tad bit of horror to find that Squawkfox was voted a winner in The Globe and Mail’s annual Best of the Money Blogs poll.

My surprise comes from finding a like-minded audience looking to save a few bucks by soaking dried beans. I’m grateful because you follow my squawks and took the time to vote. And I’m a little bit horrified since it’s not every day a photojournalist shows up to shoot my mug for the next day’s edition. Good thing I know a bit about dental floss.

Anypearlywhites, I’d love to thank The Globe and Mail’s nomination panel for considering my frugalicious blog as a contender in a field of amazing money blogs. On the panel were blogger Canadian Capitalist, Globe Market Blog writer David Berman, Chaya Cooperberg who writes the Globe’s Home Cents Blog, and Rob Carrick, the Globe’s personal finance columnist.

This year the panel chose from their favourite Canadian personal finance and investing blogs. Squawkfox topped the personal finance category and Preet Banerjee’s blog, Where Does All My Money Go, won the investing category.

Writing and maintaining a popular money blog takes a considerable amount of time and passion. To gain any kind of recognition is truly remarkable and very much appreciated. I’d love to tip my hat and introduce you to the top money blogs in the poll.

Top Investing Blogs

Where Does All My Money Go | Preet Banerjee is the brains behind Where Does All My Money Go — a blog that exposes the sometimes dubious inner workings of the financial industry. Banerjee is also a television celebrity, winning the W Network Experts Challenge last year.

Canadian Couch Potato | Journalist Dan Bortolotti makes the case for axing mutual funds in his blog Canadian Couch Potato. By showing you the considerable benefits of index investing using the simple Couch Potato method, Bortolotti’s blog could save you hundreds of thousands of dollars in investing fees. Americans can benefit from his outstanding articles too.

Larry MacDonald | Larry MacDonald blogs frequently for Canadian Business. As an economist and author, he writes on a myriad of topics, including: portfolio management, investment ideas, and business.

Top Personal Finance Blogs

Squawkfox | Long time readers of Squawkfox know me from my weekly posts. I used to write anonymously, but since the launch of my first book 397 Ways To Save Money I decided to blog under my real name. New readers can discover all the juicy details in My name is not really Squawkfox or read my About Page.

Million Dollar Journey | The Million Dollar Journey blog is the work of FrugalTrader, an anonymous blogger who aims to be a millionaire by the time he reaches 35 years young. Readers enjoy his candid journey.

Gail Vaz-Oxlade | Author, television star, and now top blogger Gail Vaz-Oxlade requires little introduction. Vaz-Oxlade is the host of the reality show Til Debt Do Us Part and is the author of Debt-Free Forever, a #1 Bestseller in Canada (also available is the US here: Debt-Free Forever).

A huge thank you to personal finance columnist Rob Carrick for his article on The best Canadian money blogs. I bet it’s not everyday he gets to write about ice cream.

It’s been a long while since my last linky blog roundup. So I thought I’d kick off the week with some good link love to share. But first, let’s talk dog booties. It seems that after posting 10 Frugal Ways to get Fit this Winter you’re all interested in my dog’s paws. The pictures were cute, non?

Booties!

Now, I’ve never been one for doggie dress-up or feline fashion since “pet wear” is expensive and mostly silly, but there are indeed times when a dear pet can benefit from winter footwear. So yes, when the weather outside is frightful I do protect my dog’s paws with the super durable Muttluks booties.

I’m pretty impressed with Muttluks since they’ve lasted many seasons on the farm. If your pet is suffering with dry cracked paws, a good dollop of Bag Balm on the foot pads and in between the toes is super frugal, healing, and helpful too. I use this balmy stuff on my own hands and feet too, so there.

To answer your most pressing dog bootie questions I’ve put together this video showing you how they go on and whether our mutt likes them. I’ll let you be the judge of the latter.

Backyard Chickens!

Now let’s talk chickens. Last year I had some major plans to build a little coop and house some backyard chickens since I love a good project and because organic eggs are tasty. All of my fine feathered plans took a left turn when a flying truck wheel nearly killed us in this car crash. Dealing with whiplash, replacing the car, and trying to promote my book were all I could handle — mentally and physically. So now I’m feeling better and back to sourcing chickens, feed, and finding coop plans. If you’ve got some backyard chicken knowledge then please do get clucky and share your comments.

Link Love

I’ve rounded up a series of financial and frugal posts from various blogs around the blogosphere. Enjoy!

Got a request?

Do you have a frugal, financial, or fun post/question/thingy request you’d like me to write about? I get considerable questions on investing topics, frugal wedding ideas, and some farming things. I’m wondering if there’s something YOU would like to read on Squawkfox? I can’t promise to write about everything — I like to stick with topics that are sexy, delicious, and fun — so if you’ve got a request within this theme then feel free to shoot it my way. I’m not out of ideas (my head is packed full) but I’d like to hear your thoughts too.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be adding some book reviews to the mix and finally finishing off my How To Write A Cover Letter Series.
The award-winning personal finance blog turns two! Get caught up with the best posts this year.

Today marks the second “Blogiversary” of this digital space known as Squawkfox. When I started this blog two years ago I never thought that anyone would stop by to subscribe to my squawks or would want to snicker at my wacky words. I was wrong. You’re all laughing with me — or at me — so yay!

Over the last two years this blog has grown beyond the bounds of my imagination with millions of visitors, over ten thousand subscribers, and too many comments to count. Thank you for spending your valuable time here. It would have been pretty darn lonely squawking by myself, without you. In these two short years I’ve met many amazing readers, received many heart-warming emails, and have enjoyed my travels across the blogosphere with many amazing bloggers.

To celebrate Squawkfox’s two-year blog anniversary (Blogiversary) I’ve rounded up the posts you liked best. Based on visits, comments, Twitters, and emails received, here are your Top Squawks from 2009!

1. 6 Words That Make Your Resume Suck

You wanted to know why your resume sucked, so I told you. I needed to say something about crappy resumes after spending weeks trying to fill a few open positions at my place of employment. The prospects applying to the jobs were talented, but their resumes really stunk. So I downed a glass (or two) of vino and squawked out this snarky post.

Within the span of 24 hours, 6 Words That Make Your Resume Suck hit the front pages of Digg, Delicious Popular, and Lifehacker. The traffic was so intense that my blog host died and took hundreds of other blogs down with it. If your blog was hosted on my server, I’m sorry for the catastrophic failure. Smile.

I’ll never fully understand why this post resonated with almost a million readers this year, but it did. I guess the moral of the story is — don’t drink and blog.

2. The Best Things in Life are Free

I introduced you to my friend Simon and shared a short story about a very long bike ride. The story is only 320 words. The bike ride was 112 miles. This is my favorite post and I’m humbled that you loved it.

This is an actual photo of Simon and me. Many people ask. Now you know.

3. 6 Action Words That Make Your Resume Rock

I guess 2009 was the year to put some polish on your resume because you all wanted your resumes to rock. This post hit the front pages of Digg and Delicious. I had to move to a new server and pay the big bucks to prevent another catastrophic blog failure.

4. 5 Ways To Screw Your Credit Card Company

Credit card companies can be sneaky sneakers, and it’s not hard to fall prey to the power of plastic. You showed them by sharing your legal ways to stick it to them!

5. My name is not really Squawkfox

You wanted to know my real name, so I told you. Thousands of people “Googled” my name the day this post went live. I guess you were looking for some good digital dirt? Snicker. Or maybe this post was so popular because I shared the secret to getting laid? Silly, I know.

6. Free Printable Workout Log

You wanted to get fit and not spend a bundle at the gym, so I shared my workout log with you. This little exercise tracker helped me train for and complete two Ironman Triathlons. This post also hit the front page of Lifehacker.

7. How to Buy a Slow Cooker or Crock Pot

You love your slow cookers, and I had fun sharing my thoughts on the humble crock. The slow cooker is a fabulous way to stay frugal and feed a family for less. Yum.

8. The Killer Credit Card Calculator

You wanted to reduce your credit card debt faster. I don’t blame you. Paying more than the minimum balance is key to killing that plastic debt and this Credit Card Calculator is just the tool to prove it. Warning, results may shock you!

9. 3 Costly Life Insurance Policies to Avoid

I landed a gig writing for the MSN Sympatico Your Money Blog this year and managed to ruffle a few financial feathers with this post on life insurance. It seems that Insurance Agents, Brokers, and other Policy Peddlers got miffed when I shared the secrets to buying better life insurance policies for FAR less money. Go figure.

Well, I received LOTS of email from angry agents. One in particular shared his rant, and then apologized for his poor punctuation and spelling because his assistant was on vacation. So, if you don’t want your hard-earned policy premiums being spent on vacations for assistants and for agents to gripe at bloggers then give this post a read. You might just get more coverage for less cash.

10. 14 Things to Do Before and After a Car Accident

I nearly lost my head (and husband) this year when a set of flying wheels flew off a truck and struck our car. Our car was totaled and I spent weeks having nightmares about eating an airbag. Not tasty. The outpouring of email from you guys was amazing, and I thank you for sharing your personal stories of similar experiences. Who knew flying wheels were so common.

Kerry K. Taylor talks about her frugal living blog, Squawkfox.com, on Business News Network (BNN).

If you were playing hooky last Friday you may have seen my debut as a talking head on Business News Network’s program Headline. I was asked on the show to speak about my experience with thrift and to share a few frugality tips with viewers. View the clip!

Being a guest on Headline with host Howard Green was a whole lot of scary mixed with a little bit of fun. I’ve never been interviewed on television before so the whole experience proved to be a huge learning experience. I am thankful for the amazing team at CHBC Kelowna for showing me how to use the ear piece and for plugging me into the mic. Both Rob and Shane were fun to chat with and calmed my nerves before I squawked my stuff on live television. I especially needed the friendly banter since I was scared out of my mind.

What was it like?
To be honest, there’s nothing magical about television behind the scenes. Since I was interviewed remotely I felt pretty disconnected during the interview. I basically sat alone in the studio with the cameraman and listened to my questions through a Star Trek gadget stuck in my ear.

It’s a weird experience to sit behind a news desk, try to communicate with a few people talking in your ear, and then answer back into a dark camera all while trying to look like you’re part of the conversation. I didn’t expect it to feel so strange, but it did.

The $6.94 Shirt
That’s right, I wore a $6.94 blue shirt for the interview. How’s that for fitting the frugal theme? I would have preferred to wear something already in my closet, but because I’ve been living on a farm for the last few years my old “office attire” is now very out of date and no longer fits. Knowing that I needed just a simple blue shirt, I went on over to Superstore and grabbed an inexpensive cotton blouse on sale. I also wore a simple pair of jeans to keep comfy.

I think the hardest part with “getting dressed” for the interview was doing my hair and makeup and not looking too much like a tool. Most stations in Canada don’t offer hair and makeup people to hosts or guests, so I was on my own. I really have no clue how to put on makeup in day-to-day life, let alone for television. But I tried my best to cover my mug and style my hair in a way to not scare off Headline viewers.

Final Thoughts?
It’s taken me almost a week to post this clip for you guys. I thought by now I would have mustered the courage to view the interview, but I must admit I’m just too uncomfortable watching myself on television. I actually didn’t know what the hosts or other guests looked like until after Carl grabbed me some screen shots for this post. Thank you Carl!

Those who have seen the clip tell me I did well and sounded very much like myself (yay!) but I’ve let a few UMMMs creep back into my language (boo). If you’re an UMMMer like me, then joining an organization like Toastmasters is a fabulous, friendly, and frugal way to work on your public speaking skills. I’ve written previously on my challenges with public speaking in Toastmasters is Torture! So why do it?. I think it’s time to head back and de-UMMMify myself.

In all I learned A LOT from my brief encounter with television. I don’t know how I got up the courage to do it, but I did. A huge thank you to Carl for supporting me in the studio. I think the poor guy was more nervous than I was.

It’s been a crazy month here on the frugal farm and for once “the crazy” isn’t all my doing. Over the month we’ve flown some kites, potted peas, avoided a mortgage meltdown, reduced credit card debt, and hacked a Swiffer.

OK, hacking the Swiffer was all my doing. But Carl built the garbage bag kites and used his programming prowess for the Credit Card Calculator. So I can’t take all the Squawky frugal fox credit this month. Smile.

The Buck Stops Here

Along with all things finance, the frugal farm met with some amazing wildlife this month. Living in the middle of a forest can be both a scary and an amazing experience. We’ve seen bears, owls, and now this gorgeous whitetailed deer.

This beautiful buck has been sleeping at the end of my driveway for the last few nights. I’m amazed he’s content to just sit there and watch me go by. His fuzzy antlers are just stunning. Swoon.

Over the last few weeks the Globe and Mail polled their readers to reveal their favorite money blogs. Well, the results are in and Squawkfox took a podium position in third place just behind Million Dollar Journey! Wow!

I just want to thank everyone who took a moment to click me a vote.
In the clip the hosts refer to me as an organic farmer. I should clarify that I LIVE on an organic farm but it’s my father-in-law who is the farmer. I just help out whenever I’m allowed too.

Huge kudos to fellow nominated bloggers Million Dollar Journey, Where Does All My Money Go, Four Pillars, and Canadian Capitalist for being awesome.
