So you can understand my surprise, gratitude, and a tad bit of horror to find that Squawkfox was voted a winner in The Globe and Mail’s annual Best of the Money Blogs poll.

My surprise comes from finding a like-minded audience looking to save a few bucks by soaking dried beans. I’m grateful because you follow my squawks and took the time to vote. And I’m a little bit horrified since it’s not every day a photojournalist shows up to shoot my mug for the next day’s edition. Good thing I know a bit about dental floss.

Anypearlywhites, I’d love to thank The Globe and Mail’s nomination panel for considering my frugalicious blog as a contender in a field of amazing money blogs. On the panel were blogger Canadian Capitalist, Globe Market Blog writer David Berman, Chaya Cooperberg who writes the Globe’s Home Cents Blog, and Rob Carrick, the Globe’s personal finance columnist.

This year the panel chose from their favourite Canadian personal finance and investing blogs. Squawkfox topped the personal finance category and Preet Banerjee’s blog, Where Does All My Money Go, won the investing category.

Writing and maintaining a popular money blog takes a considerable amount of time and passion. To gain any kind of recognition is truly remarkable and very much appreciated. I’d love to tip my hat and introduce you to the top money blogs in the poll.

Booties!

Now, I’ve never been one for doggie dress-up or feline fashion since “pet wear” is expensive and mostly silly, but there are indeed times when a dear pet can benefit from winter footwear. So yes, when the weather outside is frightful I do protect my dog’s paws with the super durable Muttluks booties.

I’m pretty impressed with Muttluks since they’ve lasted many seasons on the farm. If your pet is suffering with dry cracked paws, a good dollop of Bag Balm on the foot pads and in between the toes is super frugal, healing, and helpful too. I use this balmy stuff on my own hands and feet too, so there.

To answer your most pressing dog bootie questions I’ve put together this video showing you how they go on and whether our mutt likes them. I’ll let you be the judge of the latter.

Backyard Chickens!

Now let’s talk chickens. Last year I had some major plans to build a little coop and house some backyard chickens since I love a good project and because organic eggs are tasty. All of my fine feathered plans took a left turn when a flying truck wheel nearly killed us in this car crash. Dealing with whiplash, replacing the car, and trying to promote my book were all I could handle — mentally and physically. So now I’m feeling better and back to sourcing chickens, feed, and finding coop plans. If you’ve got some backyard chicken knowledge then please do get clucky and share your comments.

Over the last two years this blog has grown beyond the bounds of my imagination with millions of visitors, over ten thousand subscribers, and too many comments to count. Thank you for spending your valuable time here. It would have been pretty darn lonely squawking by myself, without you. In these two short years I’ve met many amazing readers, received many heart-warming emails, and have enjoyed my travels across the blogosphere with many amazing bloggers.

You wanted to know why your resume sucked, so I told you. I needed to say something about crappy resumes after spending weeks trying to fill a few open positions at my place of employment. The traffic was so intense that my blog host died and took hundreds of other blogs down with it. If your blog was hosted on my server, I’m sorry for the catastrophic failure. Smile.

I’ll never fully understand why this post resonated with almost a million readers this year, but it did. I guess the moral of the story is — don’t drink and blog.

I landed a gig writing for the MSN Sympatico Your Money Blog this year and managed to ruffle a few financial feathers with this post on life insurance. It seems that Insurance Agents, Brokers, and other Policy Peddlers got miffed when I shared the secrets to buying better life insurance policies for FAR less money. Go figure.

Well, I received LOTS of email from angry agents. One in particular shared his rant, and then apologized for his poor punctuation and spelling because his assistant was on vacation. So, if you don’t want your hard-earned policy premiums being spent on vacations for assistants and for agents to gripe at bloggers then give this post a read. You might just get more coverage for less cash.

I nearly lost my head (and husband) this year when a set of flying wheels flew off a truck and struck our car. Our car was totaled and I spent weeks having nightmares about eating an airbag. Being a guest on Headline with host Howard Green was a whole lot of scary mixed with a little bit of fun. I’ve never been interviewed on television before so the whole experience proved to be a huge learning experience. I am thankful for the amazing team at CHBC Kelowna for showing me how to use the ear piece and for plugging me into the mic. Both Rob and Shane were fun to chat with and calmed my nerves before I squawked my stuff on live television. I especially needed the friendly banter since I was scared out of my mind.

What was it like?
To be honest, there’s nothing magical about television behind the scenes. Since I was interviewed remotely I felt pretty disconnected during the interview. I basically sat alone in the studio with the cameraman and listened to my questions through a Star Trek gadget stuck in my ear.

It’s a weird experience to sit behind a news desk, try to communicate with a few people talking in your ear, and then answer back into a dark camera all while trying to look like you’re part of the conversation. I didn’t expect it to feel so strange, but it did.

The $6.94 Shirt
That’s right, I wore a $6.94 blue shirt for the interview. How’s that for fitting the frugal theme? I would have preferred to wear something already in my closet, but because I’ve been living on a farm for the last few years my old “office attire” is now very out of date and no longer fits. Knowing that I needed just a simple blue shirt, I went on over to Superstore and grabbed an inexpensive cotton blouse on sale. I also wore a simple pair of jeans to keep comfy.

I think the hardest part with “getting dressed” for the interview was doing my hair and makeup and not looking too much like a tool. Most stations in Canada don’t offer hair and makeup people to hosts or guests, so I was on my own. I really have no clue how to put on makeup in day-to-day life, let alone for television. But I tried my best to cover my mug and style my hair in a way to not scare off Headline viewers.

Final Thoughts?
It’s taken me almost a week to post this clip for you guys. I thought by now I would have mustered the courage to view the interview, but I must admit I’m just too uncomfortable watching myself on television. I actually didn’t know what the hosts or other guests looked like until after Carl grabbed me some screen shots for this post. Thank you Carl!

Those who have seen the clip tell me I did well and sounded very much like myself (yay!) but I’ve let a few UMMMs creep back into my language (boo). If you’re an UMMMer like me, then joining an organization like Toastmasters is a fabulous, friendly, and frugal way to work on your public speaking skills. I’ve written previously on my challenges with public speaking in Toastmasters is Torture! So why do it?. I think it’s time to head back and de-UMMMify myself.

In all I learned A LOT from my brief encounter with television. I don’t know how I got up the courage to do it, but I did. A huge thank you to Carl for supporting me in the studio. I think the poor guy was more nervous than I was.

The Buck Stops Here

Along with all things finance, the frugal farm met with some amazing wildlife this month. Living in the middle of a forest can be both a scary and an amazing experience. We’ve seen bears, owls, and now this gorgeous whitetailed deer.

This beautiful buck has been sleeping at the end of my driveway for the last few nights. I’m amazed he’s content to just sit there and watch me go by. His fuzzy antlers are just stunning. Swoon.

In the clip the hosts refer to me as an organic farmer. I should clarify that I LIVE on an organic farm but it’s my father-in-law who is the farmer. I just help out whenever I’m allowed too.
