The Morning Show and a Big Talk

Over the last week, and the weeks leading up to last week, I’ve had a whirlwind of presentations in need of preparation. So I prepared. And practiced. And prepped some more.

You see, I’m a bit of a reluctant speaker. I often get asked to talk to groups, but I haven’t said ‘YES’ until now. Since my chit-chats are now online for all to see, I thought I’d share my appearances and presentations with you guys here to find out what ya think!

The Morning Show — Global Toronto

I was super excited when the fine folks of The Morning Show, on Global Toronto, asked me to share five of my favorite money-saving tips with hosts Liza Fromer, Dave Gerry, Kris Reyes and Rosey Edeh.

Global The Morning Show

My call time was 7:20AM, which was 4:20AM in my jet lagged Pacific time zone state. This required a wake up call of 2AM after flying the red-eye overnight to get to the studio on time. Phew. Big hugs to the gorgeous makeup gal who turned my fug into something less of a mug.

Despite being a little worn and traveled, I HAD A BLAST on the show! Check out The Morning Show clip to see what I squawked about.

The Morning Show: Personal finance blogger Kerry K. Taylor is here to share some tips on keeping more money in your pockets. From scoring free groceries by watching the scanner to raising your insurance deductibles, she’s got helpful hints.

Talkin’ to Bloggers about Blogging

I’ve never discussed the challenges of blogging in this space. I prefer to focus on the stuff we all care about — personal finance and saving money. But after the surprising popularity of my talk at the Canadian Personal Finance Conference 2012, I’ve decided to share my slide presentation with you guys.

Squawkfox CPFC12

On September 21st I gave a one hour talk called How to get millions of people to read your blog. My intention was to show the incredible amount of work required to keep Squawkfox.com alive and kicking. The result was squawking a presentation people really liked! ‘People’ being some of the most prominent money bloggers and financial journalists in Canada. Seriously.

My slideshow doesn’t include my voice (so sorry), but you’ll see some behind the scenes shots at Squawkfox Central (me in PJs) and get an idea of the viral posts you liked best, and a few of my favorite squawks too.

There’s even a review of my talk, Squawkfox Talks: The Speaking Secret From Kerry K. Taylor by blogger and Toastmaster Promod Sharma.

Big major thanks to CPFC12 attendees for your kind words, and hugs to conference organizers Preet Banerjee (Where Does All My Money Go) and Krystal Yee (Give Me Back My Five Bucks) for convincing me to do the talk.

I guess my lesson is, I kinda like public speaking after all!

Love,
Kerry

Thanks for sharing your blogging tips, Kerry! Can’t wait to learn your trade secrets. Congrats on all your success!

They better get you to speak again next year so I can hear it in person!

I watched the interview soon after it was posted online and I think you did fabulously. Everyone seems to be saying you’re a very gifted public speaker for someone who rarely does it. Kudos!

OMG….Kerry….you are my favourite person to read…so much so, that I relentlessly forward your posts to my peeps all over the place. I thought it was a shame, that your wise waste-less warrior ways were likely wasted on the “Toronto” crowd. “CLOTH DIAPERS”…I saw it in the interviewer’s eyes….lol….I used cloth and loved it…my babies skin loved not being exposed to the plethora of toxic chemicals from paper milling and plastic making. My kids brains don’t actually thank me….but I know they would if they thought about it. Much, MUCH love, Kerry. This Ontario girl and her sis, love and live your ways, too. ;) Back to stewing 40 litres of home grown ‘maters. :)

One thing to add to your blogging slide show.
Get a really cute dog with lots of expression to model for you. Love that dog!

  5. What a pleasure to meet you in person, Kerry!

To date all the established bloggers I like reading are also nice in person (even to the levels of Mitch Joel and Seth Godin). That isn’t true for authors, keynote speakers or actors. There’s something about blogging that reveals the real person.

I’m glad you like public speaking and look forward to seeing you again.

PS I’m most impressed by how much thought and preparation you put into your blog posts. I didn’t appreciate the power of your photos (and kinda forget they’re all original) until you spoke live.

Umm…. tell me more about this scanning error = free item if it’s under $10??!

And your appearance on the show was WONDERFUL! Very well spoken. Congrats!

Thought that you did a great job on-air, Kerry! I thought that you were articulate and professional. I bet that the nerves will calm with additional exposure. Can’t wait to watch your next interview!

    Hey Kerry,

That is a huge deal! A major TV morning show, and a spot of honor amongst your peers! Mark from MOA even said that you were one of the best reluctant public speakers he had ever seen! Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Awesome work Kerry. You should be very proud!

Keep up the great work and I’ll do my best to stop by more often. :)

Great appearance, Kerry! It’s the logical next step in your career. It looks promising.

    Hey Kerry
As one of your early random followers, back when you were just Fox, I want to tell you that it was really neat to see you speak in person on the morning show. Also, your slideshow explained exactly why I immediately subscribed to your blog. I’ve always appreciated your real voice, your thoroughness, your creativity, and your practicality. I found you back in 2008 when as a 23 year old brand new college graduate, I Google searched “how to pay off my student loans” and I’ve loved Squawkfox ever since. I’ve soaked beans, microwaved popcorn in paper bags, made my own personal finance spreadsheets (based on yours), did Costco comparisons, broke up with my cable company, started ING Direct automatic savings accounts, and countless other things you have recommended over the past four years. Thank you for your advice and humor delivered to my inbox. Now, can you teach me how to use an RSS Reader? I keep hearing about them but have no idea how to begin choosing one. :)
    Thanks again,
    Renee

@Renee You just put a HUGE smile on my face. You must be one of the very first people who found me over here back when I was anonymous. Thank you so much for sticking with me. I wouldn’t worry about the RSS Reader — they are starting to phase out. But if you want to try one, Google Reader (www.google.com/reader) is free and fairly popular. :) Sending you a huge virtual hug for sincerely making my day.
