If you’re looking for healthy snack recipes for yourself, fun snacks for kids, or something tastier than breakfast cereal — then give this frugal and hippy-approved homemade granola recipe a crunchy munch.

But if you’re hunkering for a chunk of loose granola, then this uncooked (or raw) granola recipe is an amazing, easy, and healthier alternative to regular store bought and boxed fried granola. Besides, making your own healthy snacks at home is a frugal way to stretch every food dollar.
You’ll find that the varying degrees of chopped nuts, seeds, and fruits in this recipe give this granola an amazing texture.
- 1.5 cups raw rolled oats
- 3 apples
- 1 cup dried cranberries, or raisins
- 1 cup dried apple slices, or other dried fruit
- 20 dates, pitted and soaked in water for 15 minutes (add more for sweeter snacks)
- 1 cup raw almonds
- 1 cup raw sunflower seeds
- 1 cup raw hemp seeds (optional)
- 1/2 cup honey (optional)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
I used all organic ingredients bought in bulk (no name generics) costing under $7 for the batch.
1. In a food processor, place cored apples (keep the peel), dates, honey, cinnamon, and salt.
2. Grind until completely smooth. Transfer the mixture to a large mixing bowl.
3. Add 1/2 cup almonds, 1/2 cup cranberries, dried apple slices (or other dried fruit) to the food processor (you don’t need to rinse the bowl in between steps). Very coarsely chop the nuts and fruit in a few quick pulses. Add them to the bowl with the apple mixture and combine well.
4. Add the oats, whole almonds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, and cranberries to the mixture and combine.
If the granola is too moist, add a pinch more oats to the mixture. The granola may be sticky but should not be runny. Let the granola clump together in chunks to form bigger crunchy peices.
5. Spread the granola onto a food dehydrator tray and dehydrate at 135 degrees for 4-5 hours. Flip the granola and continue dehydrating for an hour or until the desired texture is reached. If you don’t own a food dehydrator then spread the mixture onto a baking sheet and set your oven to a very low temperature for several hours. The idea is to dehydrate the granola, not cook it.
5. Once cooled, store the granola in an airtight container. To maintain freshness longer, store in the refrigerator for up to a week. My granola never lasts longer than a few days.
