Amazon Top 100 and Free Book Excerpt!

My editor called yesterday and nearly gave me a heart attack. My book 397 Ways To Save Money cracked the Amazon.ca Top 100 Bestseller List placing at #93 overall. I was also the #3 top selling personal finance book in Canada. (thud)

I’m still a little numb and slightly confused over making this list. Throughout my life I’ve managed to steer clear of popularity lists, well, unless you include my high school yearbook mock election list where I ranked very highly. But I digress.

397 ways to save money bestseller

Busting onto the Amazon.ca Bestseller List is a very cool thing for this shy nerd. My editor, Kate, was very impressed when my book briefly passed Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar, saying this was “no easy feat.” (or feet?) I have no doubt. Caterpillars are hungry little munchers with enough legs to leap any list in a single bound. So I am humbled and very honored to be near any hungry bug on Amazon. I’m not sure I’ll catch Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love though – I hear it’s on Oprah’s list. πŸ˜‰

You can now download a Free PDF that includes an excerpt of Chapter 4 from my book. Feel free to share this with anyone you think would be interested in it. This PDF doesn’t look, feel, or smell as nice as the print book, but the content is the same.

The subject of Chapter 4 is Shopping. In this chapter I share some straightforward (and savvy) tips on shopping wisely so you can get what you want, buy what you need, and get home from the mall still saving money. In this chapter I also share my own shopping Buying Tactics and give you some Selling Tactics if you find you’ve got some extra stuff hanging around your home waiting to be converted to cash. I show you how.

My neighbor just finished reading this chapter and informed me it “pissed her off.” I was a little stunned that tips on saving money while shopping could “piss” anyone off. But she said, “I could have been doing these things years ago and saved thousands.” I gave her a hug.

    Congratulations! πŸ˜€
    Thanks for the excerpt, too!
I’m glad you mentioned finding a manager to ask for a discount. Cashiers, past and present, will thank you!!
Far too many “advice” books/articles just say to ask for a discount, which causes people to rush out and ask the poor cashier for a discount while they are checking out. In the vast majority of stores these days, the cashier can’t give you a discount even if (s)he wanted to because of how the register computer is set up. All it leads to is wasted time for both parties, and any customers in line behind the person.

Congrats Fox! You never know…you may end up on Oprah one day!

  11. Studenomist June 4th, 2009

    Hey Kerry,

Thanks for sharing this with us. It’s great to see a fellow Canadian PF blogger reach such great levels of success. You are a true example that hard work pays off.

  12. Doctor S June 4th, 2009

Woot woot congrats. Lets get it in the top 10.

@Shannon I’m so happy you found me via the CBC and I didn’t scare you away. πŸ˜€ I was sooo nervous when interviewed for “The Point” and “BC Almanac” I nearly passed out after the call. I still haven’t brought myself to listen to the recording. Writing is SO MUCH EASIER than speaking on the radio. It’s awesome to meet you!

@Four Pillars I think I need to check out Very Hungry Caterpillar since so many grown men (who play hockey and drink beer) are recommending it. Smile. πŸ™‚

@Lance You are always so positive and warm Lance! Thank you so much for your kind words.

    @mbhunter @Erik Thank you

@Hayden Tompkins I’m so happy your copy shipped! Thank you for being there when I was busy writing the book. Blogging buddies are the best.

@Caitlin I too was a cashier (eons ago) and know it’s the manager who has the keys and the power to discount an item. I always wished I had the power to save customers some money though. πŸ˜‰

@SilverEggplant LOL on Oprah. I don’t have a fast enough internet connection to Skype in! LOL

@Studenomist Ahh shucks. Thank you. I don’t feel successful though, I’m mostly terrified of saying something silly.

@Doctor S If my book goes to the Top 10 on Amazon then I’d suspect my mom went and bought all the copies. πŸ™‚

  18. Liara Covert June 4th, 2009

Great news about your book. It feels good to know that you are helping people, empowering them, in your own way. The positive energy yous end out reverberrates back. I found your blog through Davina at Shades of Crimson. Nice to meet a kindred spirit on a meaningful soul journey.

  19. J.D. Meier June 4th, 2009

Congrats! Too true – e-books don’t smell the same as the real deal.
