I agree with Jimmy. There is a very small percentage of people who are born into the convenience of "generous" parents and also have the ability to surpass their genius classmates to win a scholarship.

I have to agree with Jimmy, that you should probably title this "How the middle/upper class can avoid student debt." Nothing to earth shattering there about getting your parents to help you out if they can.

One good way to avoid debt for those in computer science or engineering is to do the co-op programme. University of Waterloo had 4 months of school, 4 months of work rotation, so after your first term, then your co-op term would pay for the next school term. That worked like a charm. :)

I talked to admissions at a very good grad school after being admitted and personally explained my need for a scholarship. I ended up with a part time work program 20 hs a week for a 50% tuition reduction. Over 2 years the savings were about 12000$. I had good grades and sold myself on a personal visit before classes started!

There are many programs available if you have the right attitude, appearence ect. Some programs are not well publicized, but are available if you seek them out.

Coupons, rebates and ebay are money saving and aquiring means. Learn a skill (fix computers, cars, paint or move houses) that you can get paid for doing part time - network like crazy!

A bit late to comment, but...

I've got to recommend the last tip, getting a part-time job. I worked on- and off-campus for all four years of my undergrad degree, about 20 hours per week total. Income went directly into my student loans.

Over the course of 4 years, I paid off $14,000 in student loans - earning $6,000 per year. It's amazing how little you can spend when you're 18 and living in a dorm room! Now that I have a family and a mortgage, there is no way I could be attacking my student loans so agressively.

I still have $8,000 in loans left, but it's much better than being socked with $22,000 in student loans!

Once you do have a pile of debt, you can look into student loan forgiveness programs. For example, if you teach in a Title 1 school for 5 years, you can have up to $17,500 in student loans forgiven. There are some really amazing programs out there - just do some looking in to "student loan forgiveness"
Just make sure the site is reputable (check with your loan provider to be sure).

Most of your advice is smooching off your parents, or "getting a scholarship" - both are useless for students who are unable to do this.
